York St John University

York St John was founded in 1841 as the Church College for Teacher Training. In 1975 the Separate colleges of Ripon and York merged to form the college of Ripon & York St John, with degrees award through the University of Leeds. The University was granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers in 2005 and became York St John University in October 2006. Today over 6,000 students from more than 60 countries study at the university.With around 20,000 students and some seven million tourists visiting the city all year round, York really is a lively place to be so much so that it was recently voted Europe's top international tourist destination. It's great for nightlife of all kinds. It has restaurants, pubs, wine bars and cafés to suit every taste and it's fantastic for shopping, including many independent shops. York St John is literally minutes away from the city centre, so is perfectly placed for nights out and retail therapy jaunts.

The city is steeped in history and there are loads of arts, cultural and visitor attractions to tempt you too! York Railway station is on the East Coast mainline, meaning that you can be in London in two hours, Manchester in 1 ½ and Edinburgh in 2½.We are highly rated for student satisfaction scores for teaching quality. We care about the quality of our teaching and we listen to our students' feedback. Much of your learning will be done in lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops but you will also experience group work, learning via Moodle, our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), work placements, client-projects, practical and studio work. The mix and number of contact hours will depend on which course you are studying. Our students consistently tell us that our staff (both academic and support staff) are approachable, friendly and supportive and our Academic tutor system ensures that you have all the support you need, when you need it.Our 11-acre site is in a beautiful setting facing the world-famous York Minster across the city walls. Originally built around a quadrangle in 1841, York St John's oldest buildings present a striking frontage to the University. Newer buildings added over the past few years provide a wonderful contrast and include De Grey Court and the Fountains Learning Centre which houses the library, IT facilities, Computer Science lab and a modern lecture theatre. The Foss Building houses our sports hall, a physiology laboratory, a biomechanics lab, a psychology lab, a biomedical sciences labs, a fitness suite, physiotherapy labs and general teaching rooms.

Other facilities include a dance studio, drama studio, music rooms (both practical and technical), TV and film production facilities, editing suites and dedicated art and design studios.
There are a number of catering outlets on campus and the Students' Union has a bar, café, shop and offices on campus. We are also developing our 57-acre Sports Park which is just 15 minutes walk from our main campus. Although the site is already in full swing, there are more exciting developments to come!A well-developed and maintained Students' Union offers many activities, entertainment, trips and opportunities for students to make new friends. The Students' Union has around 45 different clubs and societies to choose from ranging from playing Rugby to Radio DJ-ing. 
The Union runs a variety of commercial services, including the shop, internet café, bar and a diverse and exciting array of entertainments. The team in the Student's Union aim to provide a high quality entertainment programme in a safe, friendly environment that will offer something for everyone at value for money.
